The picture-postcard town of North Berwick is one of my favourite towns in Scotland.
In many ways it reminds me of a Cornish town in England, full of coastal beauty, and it feels a little like going back in time to more whimsical days.

You can take your food down to the beach, or sit at one of the nearby benches to enjoy the views while indulging in some of the best seafood in town. There is a covered tent-like eating area (with blankets) for when the Scottish weather is unforgiving.
2. Visit St. Andrew’s Old Kirk.
St. Andrew’s Old Kirk is a historic site from medieval times in North Berwick.
Located near the harbour, this 12th-century ruin was once the town’s main church.
Although much of the kirk is in ruins today, its remaining structure and ancient graveyard are fascinating to walk around, and there are information plaques inside where you can learn about the history of North Berwick.
The kirk was originally built on an earlier religious site, making it one of the town’s oldest landmarks.
3. Relax in North Berwick Lodge grounds.
Originally part of a private estate, The North Berwick Lodge Grounds provide a peaceful escape for walks and picnics.
This public park is filled with lush greenery, winding paths, and well-kept gardens. There are also lots of birds and wildlife to be seen. I particularly enjoyed the aviary, and seeing wild rabbits.
There’s also a play area for children, and during the summer months, the grounds often host local events and festivals.
The John Muir walk goes through the grounds and on towards Dunbar, and there are glorious views of bass rock and beyond.
4. Treat yourself to award-winning ice cream at Alandas.
For a sweet treat, head to Alandas Gelato, known for its award-winning, artisan ice cream.
Located in the heart of North Berwick, this local favourite uses fresh, natural ingredients to create rich and creamy flavours like salted caramel, raspberry ripple, and traditional Scottish tablet.

5. Visit the Scottish Seabird Centre.
The Scottish Seabird Centre is a cool place to visit and learn more about seabirds, or simply look at the exhibits and browse the wares on offer in the shop.
There are live cameras that provide real-time views of seabird colonies on nearby islands – you can even zoom in on the gannets and puffins on the Isle of May National Nature Reserve.
There is also a cafe (with sun terrace), gift shop and seasonal boat trips to see the birds.
6. Explore the John Muir Way.
Named after the famous Scottish-American naturalist and conservationist, the John Muir Way stretches 134 miles from Helensburgh to Dunbar, passing through North Berwick along the way.
