About Dunbar.

Situated 30 miles east of capital city Edinburgh, Dunbar feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s a lovely town, well worth a visit for its seaside views, rugged cliffs, and expansive beaches.

Dunbar is known for its strong ties to Scottish history, and the birthplace of renowned conservationist John Muir, evidence of which can be seen all over the town and surrounding area.

Things to do in Dunbar, Scotland.

This list of things to do in Dunbar will help you to plan your trip and decide where to stay in Dunbar.

1. Explore Dunbar Castle.

Once one of the most important fortresses in Scotland, Dunbar Castle is now a dramatic ruin.

Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the North Sea, this castle played a key role in Scottish history, particularly during the Wars of Scottish Independence. The castle also affords incredible views of the coastline.

Nearby, there are information boards detailing the castle’s rich history and famous figures like Mary, Queen of Scots, who sought refuge here in the 16th century.

2. Visit John Muir’s Birthplace.

John Muir, the famous naturalist and conservationist, was born in Dunbar in 1838. Today, his birthplace has been turned into a museum that celebrates his life and legacy.

The John Muir Birthplace Museum contains interactive exhibits about his work as an early advocate for the national park system in the United States, as well as his Scottish roots.

John Muir spent his childhood in Dunbar, before his family emigrated to America in 1849. The John Muir Trust is a Scottish charity that supports wildlife and lands.

Fun fact: John Muir Day is celebrated every year in California on 21 April.

3. Walk the John Muir Way.

Dunbar is the starting point of the John Muir Way, a scenic long-distance walking trail that stretches across central Scotland from Dunbar to Helensburgh on the west coast.

You probably won’t want to walk the entire 134 miles, but a stroll along the trail’s initial sections offers stunning coastal views and a peaceful environment.

The path meanders through coastal cliffs, fields, and forests, providing plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife and take in the fresh sea air.

Top tip: when you get to the beach section, be careful not to step on jellyfish in the sand!

4. Visit Dunbar harbour.

Dunbar’s picturesque harbour is a working fishing port, and a pleasant focal point for the town.

A small harbor with moored boats, lobster pots, and a few cars. Red-roofed buildings and ruins are visible in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

It’s a lovely place for a stroll alongside the harbour walls, watching fishing boats come and go, and perhaps even spotting some seals lounging on the rocks (see number 11 for a seal photo!)

Close by, you’ll find several cafes and restaurants.

The harbour is also the starting point for various boat trips, including wildlife tours to spot seabirds and marine life.

5. Relax on Belhaven Bay beach.

Belhaven Bay is one of Scotland’s most beautiful beaches, known for its wide stretch of golden sand and spectacular views across the Firth of Forth

A wide sandy beach with gentle waves and a distant grassy headland under a clear blue sky.

At low tide, the beach seems endless, offering plenty of space to walk, picnic, or simply relax.

The beach is part of the John Muir Country Park, a large area of dunes, salt marshes, and grasslands, ideal for nature walks and birdwatching.

Belhaven Bay is also a popular spot for water sports, particularly surfing and kiteboarding.

6. Marvel at the Belhaven Bridge (The “Bridge to Nowhere”)

One of Dunbar’s most photographed landmarks is the Belhaven Bridge, affectionately known as the “Bridge to Nowhere.” This arched footbridge spans a small stream that flows into Belhaven Bay.

At low tide, the bridge connects the sands to the surrounding dunes, providing access across the water.

However, when the tide comes in, the bridge appears to lead directly into the sea, creating an illusion that it stands alone in the water, hence its whimsical nickname.

This unique optical illusion makes Belhaven Bridge a popular spot for photographers.

7. Climb Doon Hill.

For a short but rewarding hike, Doon Hill offers panoramic views over Dunbar, the coastline, and the surrounding countryside.

The hill is steeped in local folklore, as it is said to be the home of ancient fairies and spirits.

The walk to the summit is relatively easy and takes about an hour. Visitors often leave notes for the fairies on ‘The Minister’s Tree’, or small fairy offerings as you can see above.

The hill was made famous by the Reverend Robert Kirk and his book “The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies” in 1691.

To learn about the legend of Doon Hill and Fairy Knowe, see the FAQ section below.

8. Visit Dunbar Parish Church.

Dunbar Parish Church, also known as St Anne’s Church, is a prominent historical building in the town.

A historic red brick church with a tall tower is surrounded by gravestones in a grassy cemetery under a clear blue sky.

Dating back to the 12th century, the church has a striking exterior and a fascinating history.

Inside, you can admire its beautiful stained glass windows and explore its role in the religious life of the town over the centuries.

The church services are also live-streamed and published on YouTube.

The churchyard is also worth a visit, with old gravestones and monuments that tell the stories of Dunbar’s past.

The church occasionally hosts concerts and events, so check ahead to see if there are any performances during your visit.

10. Explore Winterfield Park and Golf Course.

Winterfield Park is a peaceful green space just outside the town centre, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a family picnic.

The park also contains a playground, and the Winterfield Golf Course offers a scenic 18-hole course with stunning coastal views.

The golf course forms a small part of the John Muir Way walk. If you are walking, you will find yourself directly on the golf course, as you can see in my photo below.

The golf course is particularly enjoyable for those looking for a more casual game, as it’s less challenging than some of Scotland’s more famous courses (like St Andrews) but still offers a beautiful setting.

11. Take a wildlife boat tour.

From Dunbar Harbour, you can embark on a wildlife boat tour, where you’ll have the chance to see a variety of marine life, including seals, dolphins, and seabirds such as puffins and gannets.

Local tour company Blue Wild Tours provide tours from Dunbar harbour.

A popular sailing trip is to go around the Bass Rock (at North Berwick) and then onto a landing on the Isle of May to see the puffins. They also do private charters too.

12. Discover Dunbar High Street.

Dunbar’s charming High Street is full of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants.

A pleasant afternoon can be spent browsing local artisan stores, enjoying a coffee at a cosy café, or sampling local Scottish produce.

I recommend the Belhaven Smokehouse for fine Scottish produce, particularly smoked salmon and trout. The Dunbar Town Website gives details of all the stores and restaurants available.

Q: What is the legend of Doon Hill?

A: The legend of Doon Hill, near Aberfoyle in Scotland, revolves around the mysterious tale of the Reverend Robert Kirk, a 17th-century minister and folklorist, who is said to have been “taken” by the fairies.

Reverend Kirk, who had a deep fascination with the supernatural, wrote a book titled The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Fairies, in which he described the world of fairies and supernatural beings that supposedly coexisted with humans.

According to local legend, Kirk’s knowledge of the fairy world angered the fairies, leading them to capture him. In 1692, he was found dead on Doon Hill, but the story claims that he did not actually die. Instead, it is said that the fairies spirited him away to their realm, imprisoning his soul within the hill.

It is believed that Kirk occasionally returns to the human world in spirit form, and local folklore says that anyone visiting the hill today can communicate with the fairies by leaving offerings or tying ribbons to the trees around the summit, a tradition that continues to this day.
