Sun-drenched beaches may be Cyprus’ big draw, but head inland and you’ll discover a completely different side of the island. A Troodos day trip is the perfect antidote to the coast, offering monasteries, waterfalls, wine tastings, and some of the prettiest villages in Cyprus.

The Troodos Mountains are all winding roads, cool pine forests, and stone-built villages where time seems to slow down.
👋 I’m Hazel, a travel blogger who’s explored Cyprus from its divided capital to its wild peninsulas. As a solo traveller, I loved the Troodos for its mix of nature, history, and warm hospitality. This itinerary is designed to help you see the highlights in one relaxed day.
Morning – Scenic Drive & First Village Stop ☀️
From the coast (Limassol, Larnaca, or Paphos), it’s about 1-1.5 hours into the mountains. Rent a car from Discover Cars for maximum freedom. The villages are best explored at your own pace.
First stop: Omodos Village, famous for its cobbled square, wine cellars, and the Monastery of the Holy Cross (also known a Timios Stavros Monastery). Pop into a local kafeneio (coffee shop) for a Cypriot coffee.

Browse little shops selling lacework, zivania (local spirit), and homemade sweets.
Midday – Monasteries & Mountain Views 🏛️
Head to Kykkos Monastery, the most famous in Cyprus, known for its golden mosaics and sacred icons.

Alternatively, if you prefer something smaller and quieter, stop at Trooditissa Monastery along the way. There are many amazing in monasteries in Cyprus, and most of them are in the Troodos mountains.
If you’re planning a monastery visit, I’ve also rounded up the best hotels near Cyprus monasteries which might come in handy.
Lunch 🍽️
Enjoy traditional Cypriot dishes at a taverna in the mountains. Try Stou Kir Yianni in Omodos or Katoi Restaurant in Omodos for hearty meze.

My photos above were taken at the Olive Tree Tavern in Polemi.
Afternoon – Nature Trails & Waterfalls 🌿
Take a short hike to Caledonia Waterfalls (around 3km round trip, shaded and refreshing).
Or, if you’re up for more walking, try the Artemis Trail around Mount Olympus. It’s a gentle 7km loop with sweeping views.

Both trails are easy to follow and safe for solo travellers, with plenty of others usually out walking.
Evening – Wine Tasting & Return 🍷
Before heading back, stop at a local winery. The Troodos are the heart of Cyprus’ wine country. Look for vineyards around Omodos, Koilani, or Platres (one in Platres is Lambouri winery).
Many offer casual tastings, and as a solo traveller you’ll often end up chatting with the owners (I certainly did!)

My photos above were taken at the Tsangerides Winery in Lemona. This one is quite far west, but I have pinned it on the map below in case you want to check it out.
After your winery visit, drive back down to the coast in time for dinner seaside, unless you fancy having dinner with your wine, of course!
