Amalfi Coast Roads

Be careful when driving on your Amalfi Coast road trip.

Driving on the Amalfi Coast is exciting and beautiful, but it can be a bit tricky. The roads wind along the cliffs with amazing views of the sea and towns. However, the roads are narrow and steep, so you need to be careful, especially when other vehicles are around. Take your time to enjoy the stunning landscapes and charming villages. It might be a little scary, but driving on an Amalfi Coast road trip is a special experience to see the beauty of Italy’s famous coastline.

If you’d rather not do the driving, consider taking a guided tour of the Amalfi Coast instead.

What other towns are there on the Amalfi Coast?

In addition to the well-known towns of Amalfi, Positano, Ravello, and Sorrento, there are several other charming towns and villages along the Amalfi Coast worth exploring on a day trip. You could easily add any of these towns to your Amalfi Coast road trip itinerary.

  1. Atrani: Atrani is a small and picturesque fishing village located just a short walk from Amalfi. It offers a more tranquil and authentic atmosphere with narrow streets, local cafes, and a beautiful beach.
  2. Maiori: Maiori boasts one of the longest and widest beaches on the Amalfi Coast, making it a popular destination for beach lovers. It also has a cute seafront promenade and historical sites to explore.
  3. Minori: Just a short distance from Maiori, Minori is a quaint town known for its Roman Villa, ancient ruins, and lemon groves. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the local ambiance.
  4. Praiano: Nestled between Positano and Amalfi, Praiano offers a quieter alternative to its more famous neighbours. The town is perched on the cliffs, providing stunning views of the coastline.
  5. Cetara: Cetara is a small fishing village known for its anchovies and traditional fishing practices. It offers a glimpse into the authentic coastal life and a chance to sample fresh seafood dishes.
  6. Conca dei Marini: This lesser-known town is famous for the Grotta dello Smeraldo, an enchanting emerald-green sea cave accessible by boat.
  7. Vietri sul Mare: Considered the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Vietri sul Mare is known for its colourful ceramics and beautiful beaches. It’s a lovely place to explore before venturing further along the coast.

Each of these Amalfi Coast towns and villages has its own unique charm, history, and attractions, and you’ll drive past many of them on your Amalfi Coast road trip.

Food & drink: local delicacies of the Amalfi Coast.

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know I don’t go anywhere without indulging in the local cuisine – and Italian regions are my favourite!

On your Amalfi Coast road trip you can enjoy freshly caught seafood, and local pasta dishes such as scialatielli ai frutti di mare (seafood pasta) or spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). There is always lashings of gelato and granita available, and you must also try the region’s famous limoncello.

Here is a summary of the most popular food and drink items from the Amalfi Coast.

Fresh Seafood

Being a coastal region, the Amalfi Coast is renowned for its fresh seafood. Popular dishes include grilled fish, seafood risotto, spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), or baccalà (salted cod). A famous local specialty is scialatielli ai frutti di mare, a pasta dish with a medley of fresh seafood cooked in a tasty sauce.

Limoncello

The Amalfi Coast is famous for its lemons, particularly the fragrant and juicy Sfusato Amalfitano lemons. One iconic product derived from these lemons is limoncello, a sweet and tangy lemon liqueur. One of the best places to try limoncello (in my opinion) is Positano (or Sorrento), but you can get limoncello all over the Amalfi Coast.

Neapolitan Pizza

Naples, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, is the birthplace of the Neapolitan pizza. The traditional Neapolitan pizza features a thin and soft crust topped with simple yet delicious ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, fresh basil, and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

Sfogliatella

Sfogliatella is a popular pastry hailing from the Campania region, which includes the Amalfi Coast. This flaky, shell-shaped pastry has a crispy outer layer and a rich filling made with ricotta cheese, semolina, candied fruit, and sometimes flavoured with hints of lemon or orange. There are two main types: sfogliatella riccia (curly) and sfogliatella frolla (shortcrust).

Mozzarella di Bufala

Made from the milk of water buffaloes, this cheese has a soft texture and a slightly tangy taste. Enjoy it on its own, paired with fresh tomatoes and basil in a Caprese salad, or as a topping on your Neapolitan pizza.

Gelato

Treat yourself to a scoop or two of creamy gelato in a variety of flavours, ranging from classic favourites like pistachio and chocolate to unique regional flavours like lemon and almond. An excellent place for gelato in Sorrento is the Gelateria Davide (see photo in Sorrento section above).

Local Wines

The Amalfi Coast region is also known for its excellent wines. Sample the local varieties, such as Lacryma Christi, Fiano di Avellino, and Greco di Tufo.

During your Amalfi Coast road trip, you’ll find local trattorias and family-run restaurants to fully immerse yourself in the authentic flavours of the region.

FAQS about your Amalfi Coast road trip.

Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs) about going on an Amalfi Coast road trip:

Q: Is it safe to drive along the Amalfi Coast on a road trip?

A: Driving along the Amalfi Coast can be challenging due to its narrow and winding roads, but it is generally safe if you exercise caution and follow traffic rules. Be prepared for narrow passages, sharp curves, and steep cliffs. Drive at a moderate speed, be mindful of other drivers, and use designated parking areas when stopping. It’s advisable to have experience driving in similar conditions before attempting the Amalfi Coast road trip.

Further reading: Hazel’s Guide to Driving in Puglia, Italy.

Q: Should I rent a car or use public transportation?

A: Renting a car offers flexibility and allows you to explore the Amalfi Coast at your own pace. However, if you’re not comfortable driving or prefer to avoid the hassle of parking, public transportation is a viable option. The Amalfi Coast is well-connected by buses and ferries, providing easy access to the main towns. Consider your preferences, itinerary, and level of comfort when deciding between renting a car or using public transportation.

Q: When is the best time to go on an Amalfi Coast road trip?

A: The best time to go on an Amalfi Coast road trip is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is pleasant, and the tourist crowds are relatively smaller compared to the peak summer season. However, even during the summer, the Amalfi Coast’s beauty is undeniable, albeit with more tourists. Avoid visiting during the winter months as some businesses may be closed, and the weather can be unpredictable.

Q: How long should I plan for my Amalfi Coast road trip?

A: The duration of your driving Amalfi Coast itinerary depends on the time you have available and the number of places you wish to explore. Ideally, allocate at least three to five days to fully appreciate the Amalfi Coast’s beauty and visit the main towns like Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. This time frame allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable journey, with enough time to immerse yourself in each destination.

Q: Are there parking facilities along the Amalfi Coast?

A: Yes, there are parking facilities available in the towns along the Amalfi Coast, but they can be limited and expensive. It’s recommended to use designated public parking areas located on the outskirts of the towns, as parking within the towns themselves can be challenging due to limited space and high demand. Consider researching parking options and costs in advance to plan accordingly.

Q: How do I get to the Amalfi Coast?

A: The most common way to get to the Amalfi Coast is by flying into Naples International Airport (NAP) and then taking a taxi, bus, or private transfer to your destination on the coast. Alternatively, you can take a train to Sorrento and then use local buses or boats to reach other towns along the coast.

Q: Can I visit the Amalfi Coast without a car?

A: The Amalfi Coast is well-served by public transportation. Buses run regularly between the main towns, allowing you to explore the coastline conveniently. Additionally, ferries connect the towns and provide a scenic way to travel between them. You can also try taking guided tours from Sorrento.

Pack wisely.

Pack comfortable walking shoes as the region involves walking on uneven terrains. Also, bring light and breathable clothing for the warm Mediterranean weather. Don’t forget to carry sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong sun.

Be mindful of crowds.

The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination, especially during the peak summer months. If possible, plan your Amalfi Coast road trip during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) to enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere and fewer crowds.

Indulge in the delicious local dishes and flavours unique to the Amalfi Coast, such as fresh seafood, pasta, and lemon-infused delicacies. Explore small local eateries to experience authentic Italian cuisine.

Stay hydrated.

Carry a refillable water bottle and stay hydrated, especially during hot summer days. There are many drinking fountains in the towns where you can refill your bottle with fresh spring water.

Respect local customs.

Respect the local culture and customs. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly, and be mindful of noise levels, especially during religious services. It’s a good idea to take a light scarf to cover up when visiting religious buildings.

Be prepared for stairs

The towns on the Amalfi Coast are built on cliffs, and many areas have steep staircases. Be prepared for some uphill walking and pack light to make navigating easier.

Protect against mosquitoes.

In some areas, especially during the summer, mosquitoes can be prevalent. Bring insect repellent to avoid bites and discomfort. This is a good insect repellant from Amazon.
