I have explored the Amalfi Coast many times, with my most recent visit being in 2022 where I once again fell in love with the region. While technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento serves as an excellent starting point for your road trip. It has incredible views and a vibrant atmosphere. Begin your Amalfi Coast road trip by starting in the charming town of Sorrento.
If you are currently in Naples, you can take the A3 highway south towards Sorrento. The journey takes approximately one hour.
Once in Sorrento, park your car and explore the town’s narrow streets, vibrant piazzas, and indulge in the delicious local limoncello. Food & drink: local delicacies of the Amalfi Coast.
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know I don’t go anywhere without indulging in the local cuisine – and Italian regions are my favourite!
On your Amalfi Coast road trip you can enjoy freshly caught seafood, and local pasta dishes such as scialatielli ai frutti di mare (seafood pasta) or spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). There is always lashings of gelato and granita available, and you must also try the region’s famous limoncello.
Here is a summary of the most popular food and drink items from the Amalfi Coast.
Fresh Seafood
Being a coastal region, the Amalfi Coast is renowned for its fresh seafood. Popular dishes include grilled fish, seafood risotto, spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams), or baccalà (salted cod). A famous local specialty is scialatielli ai frutti di mare, a pasta dish with a medley of fresh seafood cooked in a tasty sauce.
Limoncello
The Amalfi Coast is famous for its lemons, particularly the fragrant and juicy Sfusato Amalfitano lemons. One iconic product derived from these lemons is limoncello, a sweet and tangy lemon liqueur. Naples, the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, is the birthplace of the Neapolitan pizza. The traditional Neapolitan pizza features a thin and soft crust topped with simple yet delicious ingredients like San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella di bufala, fresh basil, and a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil.

Sfogliatella
Sfogliatella is a popular pastry hailing from the Campania region, which includes the Amalfi Coast. This flaky, shell-shaped pastry has a crispy outer layer and a rich filling made with ricotta cheese, semolina, candied fruit, and sometimes flavoured with hints of lemon or orange. There are two main types: sfogliatella riccia (curly) and sfogliatella frolla (shortcrust).
Mozzarella di Bufala

Gelato
Treat yourself to a scoop or two of creamy gelato in a variety of flavours, ranging from classic favourites like pistachio and chocolate to unique regional flavours like lemon and almond. An excellent place for gelato in Sorrento is the Gelateria Davide (see photo in Sorrento section above).
